In a report by the Australian Government’s Department of Employment, researchers found that employment in child care occupations were expected to increase strongly over the next five years, with an expected growth of 22.7 per cent (or 2900) for child care centre managers and 26.1 per cent (or 39,000) for childcare workers. 2. Patient

Patience is a person’s ability to endure something tedious without getting frustrated. To be patient is to be level headed, and calm. Instead of getting riled up, they stay composed and in control of the situation. For many, patience is the ultimate virtue, being a very tricky thing to master! Without a doubt, the single greatest quality every childcare worker has is the ability to be patient. Working within early childcare requires a lot of patience on a daily basis. Whether it be listening to “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” on repeat, dealing with the odd tantrum or remaining encouraging when a child attempts to tie their shoe lace for the 10th time in a row; patience is essential to providing the best quality education and care to young children.

 

3. A Sense of Humour

If you don’t have the ability to laugh at yourself, life can get pretty boring! Working in childcare calls for the ability to be able to laugh and make light of tough situations. For example: Laughing instead of scolding or lecturing a young child when they accidently spill paint all over their clothes. Being able to apply humour to a situation, or being able to make a young child feel better about their obvious mistake, instead of upset or guilty, creates a positive learning environment for young children to grow and feel safe! And, most importantly, have a laugh!
Not only this, they say laughter is the best medicine – and for a good reason! A study published in the journal Cognition and Emotion suggests laughter helps children learn new tasks Cognition and Emotion, 2016. The study, which included over fifty 18-month-old infants, found that using humour with young children in a demonstration of complex task enhanced their learning potential significantly compared to young children who were not taught the task using humour. 4. Friendly

To work in childcare, you need to be warm and friendly. Studies have shown that children’s personalities are largely formed at a young age, so it is essential that childcare workers foster a safe and nurturing environment where children will feel free to be themselves. Being a friendly, kind, familiar face that children trust can help achieve this. Playing, being silly, drawing pictures and genuinely listening to children speak are characteristics of a passionate childcare worker. 5. Flexibility

On average, Childcare centres operate for 8 hours a day. Staff can work on a part-time basis, with staggered starting times. For example: You could be required to work in 5 hours shifts such as a morning shift from 8AM – 1PM or an afternoon shift from 12PM – 5PM. Childcare workers who have commitments during the week such as study, or family responsibilities, enjoy the flexible nature of working part-time, recognising the benefits of working later, or earlier on specific days. Childcare workers must also be flexible in day-to-day routines, being prepared for sick children, missed naps or toilet training emergencies that disrupt the daily flow of the centre. How To Help Children With Learning Disabilities In The Classroom

Children with learning disabilities often require extra attention and support during classroom activities. Typically, children with learning disabilities have normal intelligence but face issues when it comes to developing reading, writing, and mathematical skills.

As an early childhood educator, providing the best quality assistance to children with learning difficulties is extremely important. 1. Allow extra time for completing class tasks

For some children with learning disabilities an extra 30 minutes to complete a test is the difference between passing and failing; especially for students with Dyslexia. Students with Dyslexia find reading and processing written words extremely tricky. When printed on a page, words and letters often appear jumbled or mixed up. According to the Learning Disabilities Association (LDA), Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability, students who have Dyslexia normally have problems reading, decoding letters, comprehending text, writing and spelling.  LDA, 2017.

For this very reason, students with Dyslexia should be given extra time to complete exams, tests, written classroom activities and all other summative assessments. This extra time gives students a chance to work through tests at their own pace.

 

2. Use a tape recorder

This is a great learning resource for assisting students with Dyslexia. Because Dyslexic students face trouble reading, global leaders in assistive technology and disability support Iansyst suggest using a tape recorder to translate directions and instructions verbally. Iansyst, 2014

Rather than providing a student with a written handout, try recording your instructions on a personal tape recorder and handing it to the child to listen to. This way, instead of struggling through a list of instructions, the student can sit at their desk and listen to the instructions through a private headset whilst others take their time reading.

3. Reduce need for writing

Children who have Dysgraphia have problems writing letters and words. According to the Learning Disabilities Association, children with this disability generally have illegible handwriting, inconsistent spacing, poor spelling and difficulty composing sentences. The greatest issue however is their inability to think and write at the same time. LDA, 2017

To help excel their learning reduce their need for writing. This can be done by providing copies of class instructions, notes, outlines or pre-printed study sheets in class, instead of asking them to copy down notes from the whiteboard or text-book. Another effective learning strategy for students with Dysgraphia is the incorporation of ICT and special learning software in assessment. Instead of grading them on a written report, allow students to present their work through a range of pictures, sounds and videos.

 

4. Keep classroom chatter to a minimum

Although this is an obvious classroom rule across all learning environments, students with learning disabilities will find it easier to focus when it is quiet and their area is free from distractions.

To help the student stay settled and focus, consider where the student would best be seated.  Is it best if the student sits away from windows and doors to minimise distractions from visitors, birds or the weather? Is it best if the student sits directly opposite your desk? Should the student be seated next to their best friend to encourage a feeling relaxation? Try creating a silent reading corner, or a quiet thinking desk. These places promote a safe place for students to visit and silently work.

Pro tip: Classrooms set up with seats in rows, with focus on the teacher, will work better than having students seated around tables or facing one another in other arrangements.

 

5. Use visual aids and multi-sensory learning techniques

Try multi-sensory learning techniques that will engage students who have difficulty focusing and paying attention. Multi-sensory learning is the integration of sight, sound and touch. According to Dyslexia Reading Well multi-sensory leaning can activate different parts of the brain and is especially effective for Dyslexic students. Dyslexia Reading Well, 2017

Visual: Try to incorporate lots of visual cues during lessons such as posters, videos, graphs and charts. You could also use coloured coded whiteboard markers when writing on the whiteboard to highlight important topics.

Sound: Try to incorporate lots of singing, dancing, rhyming, audio tones, clapping and discussion. Dyslexic students can also be supplied with audiobooks. This is commonly referred to in the education word as ‘reading with your ears.’

Touch: Physical things help aide the learning of students with disabilities, especially in topics such as math and science. For example: wooden counting cubes for math, clocks with adjustable hands for time, fake notes and coins for money or plastic cakes and pies for fractions.

6. Assign them a ‘study buddy’

 

Known as class-mate peer coaching, the act of assigning two students together can promote active learning environments that nurture and support positive learning experiences. For students with learning disabilities this is a great way to subtly make sure they are engaged and receiving the correct resources they need to succeed. Sometimes assigning a student a classroom Support Aide (although sometimes necessary) can feel isolating. After all, no young child wants to feel different! Instead, try pairing them with a more senior student who excels during classroom learning activities or who has a great academic record. Students who actively help other students learn are reinforcing their own learning by instructing others! And the student receiving the in-class assistance will feel more comfortable and open interacting with others.

National Day of Real Play – 8 Fun Outdoor Activities for Children

Tomorrow, the 5th of June, is official National Day of Real Play! This annual celebration encourages parents, caregivers and children all around Australia to get up, turn the TV off and be active. This day is important because it celebrates the benefits of outside play on kids’ health and happiness. Real play is about letting children’s imaginations run free, socialising with others and being active. Overall, it is a chance for children all over Australia to get outside, get dirty and have fun!

For childcare workers, family day care owners or parents looking to celebrate National Day of Real Play, we have put together a list of 8 fun outdoor activities that are easy and cost-effective! Make sure you share the fun by getting everyone you know involved!

 

Go on a Treasure Hunt

For hours of fun, why not try a good ol’ fashion treasure hunt? This budget friendly activity requires no clean up and can be used to entertain a number of children of all different ages – perfect for childcare centres with a range of children, or a family with children with large age gaps. To set up this activity, head down to your local cheap shop to pick up some special ‘treasures.’ Cheap shops are a gold mind of small gadgets and toys for kids such as chocolate foil coins, plastic jewellery, yoyo’s, mini board games and other nick-knacky things! Once you have picked up several things you think the children would enjoy, hide them in the backyard of the house or day-care and create a treasure map. Next, give the children the map and watch them enjoy hours of fun!

Pro Tip: Stain the treasure map to give it an old ‘ancient’ feel. Creating treasure hunts with a theme is also a great way to educate and engage children about history.  For example: A pirate treasure hunt with fun facts about pirates at each spot.

Build an Outdoor Cubby House

Who doesn’t love building a cubby house? The best and most simple way to do this is to round up any large wanted cardboard boxes from places like Bunnings, Mitre 10 or JB Hi-Fi. With these free cardboard boxes you can cut and shape them however you want! Use extra cardboard to shape roofs or chimneys and scissors to cut-out windows and doors! For extra fun, why not try using paint, crayons or stickers to decorate the outside of the cubby house? To create an outside cubby house you could also try using plastic tables and chairs together, with a large dark coloured sheet over the top.  This tepee style cubby house has become very popular in recent years! On the inside of the cubby house children can set up their toys and play with others.

Create a Mudpie Kitchen

The perfect way to get dirty! Not only is this a great way to exercise a child’s imagination,  children will also have hours of fun digging up dirt, mixing and forming mudpies, letting them dry and pretending to serve them to family and friends at the end of the day. To get your mudpie kitchen started, set up small work table using an outdoor plastic table that can easily be cleaned. On this table add a set of play kitchen pots, pans, spoons, bowls and trays! Next, let the kids dig up dirt using plastic spades and buckets. On the table let the children add the dirt and water together to start forming a thick, dirty, mudpie paste!  From here, the rest is history. Children will enjoy making mudpies outside for hours!

Pro Tip: Encourage the children to frolic around the garden and collect fun, natural decorations to put on top of the mudpies. Some ideas for decorations include sticks, rocks, leaves, gumnuts, flowers and bark.

 

Go Camping in the Backyard

Afterschool, or on the weekend, spend time erecting a tent in the backyard. This is a super easy and fun way to get kids outside and physically active. Setting up a campsite is hard – but also a lot of fun! Once the tent is set up, a child’s imaginations will run wild. Encourage them to think about what kind of activities they would be doing if they were actually camping. For example collecting wood, building a fire, going fishing, roasting marshmallows, or going on a hike! This will lead to hours of play incorporating both imagination and the outdoors. This is also makes for a fun group activity!

Go on a Bike Ride

This super easy and super simple outdoor activity is ideal for children 5+ years old! The wind, the warm sun and the blue sky! What else could you ask for? For a family this a great way to get out of the house and explore your local neighbourhood. In the afternoon try rounding up the family to head off for a 30-60 minute long bike ride. Make sure the route you choose includes a bike friendly path. To avoid accidents, lead the ride on the bike path and always ensure the children are an appropriate space length apart. No one wants any crashes! For the ultimate bike ride experience, we recommend riding to a nearby park or playground. This way, when you reach the park the children will have time to rest and drink plenty of water.

Build a Veggie Patch Garden

Not only is this child-friendly activity great for the environment it is also really cost-effective! Growing your own fresh produce is a sustainable and environmentally friendly way of providing fresh food.  With a homemade veggie patch you can grow a range of healthy produce including; lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, beans, spinach, capsicum and herbs. The children will love touching, tasting, smelling and seeing the plants and vegetables grow! Building a veggie patch for the day care or for your family to tend to is a great way to bond and be active, outside in the sun!

To get started on your own veggie patch garden – either as childcare or family project – you will need these basic materials:

A premade garden bed (available from all hardware stores for under $50)

A bag of soil

Fertilizer

A spade

Watering can

Gardening gloves

A compost bin

Seeds to plant

Build Sandcastles

This can be a lot of fun – especially with epic castle shaped buckets, mini flags and water moats! Encouraging children to get outside and create things with their hands is a great way of sparking creativity at a young age! Try filling the sandpit with a range of beach related toys like different sized buckets and spades. Children may also enjoy decorating their sandcastles with mini flags, plastic figurines, toys, balls or even natural materials like sticks, leaves, rocks and feathers! And let’s not forget the best part about building a sandcastle – being able to jump on it at the end of course!

Pro Tip: Have a sandcastle competition! Whoever makes the biggest, or most magnificent sandcastle wins!

 

Do Chalk Drawings on the Driveway

A great alternative to drawing all over the walls – drawing all over the driveway! Buy a bucket of multi coloured chalk and let the children go wild. This life sized canvas will inspire the artist in every child. Not only is it cheap and easy to set up, chalk drawings on the driveway, or on the day-care pavement will entertain children of all ages. Aside from getting creative and using the chalk to draw pictures, children could also use it for starting other games like hopscotch, body outline tracing and four square.

5 Childcare Jobs You Need To Know About

Considering a career in childcare but unsure of the employment opportunities?  In Australia job prospects for teachers and early childhood educators are good. According to the annual Childcare Occupations Report released by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) several roles in the childcare industry such as child care centre managers and childcare worker are in very high demand. As the report shows, there are currently 17,600 approved child care services operating in Australia (700 more than March 2015) with an enrolled 1.2 million children. This number is expected to increase and childcare employment opportunities to sky rocket in the next five years. This is due to a projected increase in population of children under the age of 13 (833,000 children), requiring an extra 113,000 fully qualified, full-time childcare workers by 2020. Nanny

A Nanny is someone who is employed by a family to care for children in their own home. The role of a general Daily Nanny includes taking care of the children’s physical and emotional needs, dressing them, bathing them, transporting them to and from school, preparing meals, helping them complete homework or extracurricular activities, taking them on outings and reinforcing appropriate discipline. Additional Nanny Responsibilities may include laundry, light cleaning and upkeep.

A Night Nanny, typically trained and experienced in newborn care, is employed to ensure parents stay rested and receive a full night’s sleep. Night Nannies have a background in newborn care involving the soothing, feeding and sleep routine management of infants.  Nannies can either be live in or live out; meaning they reside with their host family or return to their home each night.

A Nanny generally works between 3-10 hours a day depending on the family needs E.g: A nanny may only be required to pick children up from school, transport them home and provide afternoon snacks and homework assistance.

Average salary: $31,000 – $53, 999

Au Pair

An Au pair is a young adult who provides safe and reliable live-in care to children in different parts of the world. The difference between a Nanny and an Au Pair is that:

  • They are from a foreign country
  • They are required to live with the family
  • They are young (18-30 years old)
  • They are typically unmarried and without children

People sign up to be Au pairs to travel and experience another countries culture and language. An Au works 10 hours a day with 2 two days off. These contracts typically last 12-months but in some cases may extend further. During their time off, Au pairs travel short distances, visit local attractions and expand their social and cultural network.

The role of an Au pair is very similar to that of a Nanny however does include the expectation of light housework. In addition, the pay rate for an Au Pair is lower to that of a Nanny’s because they are provided accommodation in family guest rooms or granny flats.

Child Care Worker/ Early Childhood Educator

A childcare worker is someone who supervises and cares for children aged between 0-12 years old. They are responsible for meeting the basic needs of children, such as supervising and monitoring their safety, preparing meals and organising meal times, maintaining their general hygiene and engaging them in stimulating educational activities.

A childcare workers role will change depending on the age of the child. For example, in an out of school hours care facility (OSHC), commonly known as After School Care, childcare workers are  responsible for collecting the children from class, providing afternoon tea,  assisting with homework and leading fun group activities. They must also watch for emotional or developmental changes within children and bring the issues up with parents when they come to collect them.

The National Quality Framework (NQF) also requires Childcare workers to keep records of children’s progress, routine and interests in a daily observations handbook.

Day Care Manager

A Day Care Manager is responsible for staff development, supervision of staff, administration of centre records, and the direct care of children.

In charge of day-to-day operations, the Day Care Manager is responsible for designing the program the day care uses.  This program includes a schedule of daily activities to entertain, stimulate and educate the children at the day care, a structured, nutritious meal plan, a consistent and reasonable plan for dealing with disciplinary issues, allergy reaction plans and an emergency evacuation plan.

This program is incredibly detailed and must be up to the National Quality Framework (NQF) standard or the centre can be at risk of being shut down. The Day Care manager is also responsible for ensuring the facility is kept clean and well-organized. Another major responsibility of the Day Care Manager is liaising with parents and teachers about any issues or concerns staff may have with children. They are considered the main point of contact.

Average salary: $49, 700 – $78, 693

Family Day Care Owner 

A Family Day Care owner is someone who provides approved childcare services from the comfort of their own home.

A major difference between a family day care and child care centres is the very low child-to-carer ratios, which allows family day care educators and children to develop very strong bonds. In addition, family day care centres provide a unique, one of kind 24/7 child care service for working Australian families with flexible full-time, part-time, weekend or overnight care.

A family day care worker has the same responsibilities of that of a regular child care worker. A family day care owner must provide early education and care for all its children and maintain a program detailing a schedule of daily activities, meal plans, actions for dealing with disciplinary issues and an emergency evacuation plan that aligns with the National Quality Framework (NQF).

Family Day care also has a number of benefits including:

  • A home based-setting which evokes a feeling of familiarity and safety for children
  • A secure and quiet learning space for homework e.g dining room tables
  • A small group environment that promotes social development and the improvement of team building skills
  • Flexible drop off and pick up times e.g: beyond the standard 7AM-6PM times. Some Family Day Care centres are 24/7
  • No age restrictions separating siblings or friends e.g: In some day cares centres siblings are split between rooms due to age (e.g: a 6 year old must stay in the blue room whilst the 12 year old brother must stay in the age appropriate red room)

4. You’ll keep active

Early childhood educators or childcare workers don’t spend their days sitting at a desk in a quiet office space, sipping tea. Instead they are up and about on their feet, breaking a sweat, supervising children and overseeing activities on the playground, at the art table, on the mat, in the silent reading section or on the oval.

If you decide to kick start your career in childcare you can expect to keep active during the work day and increase your fitness level!

They should always be prepared, especially during outside play or sports activities where a child could expect to fall short of breath. What Treatment Should I Give To a Child Who Is Experiencing Asthma Like Symptoms?

If a child is displaying asthma like symptoms childcare workers are advised to call an ambulance immediately on 000 and follow the four-step Asthma First Aid Plan. This Asthma First Aid plan is a national guideline that is used in schools, early childhood education and care services, and hospitals across Australia. The Asthma First Aid Plan uses an inhaler to treat and relieve symptoms of asthma. An inhaler is a portable device used for administering medications that once breathed in, will relieve asthma like symptoms.  Depending on the severity of a child’s asthma, an inhaler will be filled with different medication, for example Ventolin. To use the inhaler, one must remove the cap, check the dose counter, shake, connect the spacer, place mouthpiece between a child’s lips and press firmly down on the canister; releasing the correct amount of medication. This process is repeated several times, or until asthma like symptoms are relieved. Children born with asthma, and who regularly experience asthma like symptoms, are taught how to use inhalers from a very young age.

Regulations About Asthma Management in Childcare

Under National Law and Regulations, at least one person on duty at any time, in any education and care setting, must have approved current training in emergency asthma management.

As outlined in the National Law and Education and Care Services National Regulation, the management of medical conditions, such as asthma in education and care services, is a national regulatory requirement. Over the years there has been a rapid increase in demand for childcare services. Long waiting lists, increased costs and inflexible hours have led many people to start their own family day care. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistic, family day care accounts for 12 per cent of Australia’s entire early childhood education and care sector with more than 17,00 educators! ABS, 2014

Step 1: Get Qualified

In Australia, all childcare workers and educators are required to have, or to be actively working towards, an approved Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.  This training doesn’t need to be completed before you open your own family day care, but it does need to have been started.

You can further this training with a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care. Step 2: Understand the National Quality Framework (NQF)

Before you start your family day care you must have a comprehensive understanding of the National Quality Framework (NQF). According to the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA), this is legislative frame work that creates a uniform approach to the regulation and quality assessment of child care services in Australia. As a family day care owner you will be required to understand and implement its guidelines into your service to ensure positive outcomes for children. It covers several areas such as:

– Educational program and practice
– Children’s health and safety
– Physical environment
– Staffing arrangements
– Relationships with children
– Collaborative partnerships with families and communities
– Leadership and service management

Step 3: Understand and Meet Regulatory Requirements

In order to start your own family day care you must meet regulatory requirements. Because you will be teaching and caring for children in your own home, you need to ensure your residence is safe, and you are practising within legal guidelines.  A list of these requirements, named the Education and Care Services National Law and Regulations can be found online at ACECQ.  Some things on this list include:


Your home must have:

– Indoor spaces that are well ventilated with enough natural light and safe temperature
– An outdoor space that is enclosed by a fence or barrier that is of a height and design that prevents children from going through, over or under
– A first aid kit that is suitably equipped and easily recognisable is readily accessible
– Access to an operating telephone or other similar means of communication for immediate communication to and from parents and emergency services
– Be a safe and secure environment for the children in your care

 

While caring for children you must ensure:

– Children are adequately supervised (maximum of 7 children at a time, or 4 children preschool age or under in the group)
– Children are not subject to any form of corporal punishment or discipline that is unreasonable in the circumstances
– Children are provided with an environment free from the use of tobacco, illicit drugs and alcohol
– Children have access to nutritious food and safe drinking water
– Children’s needs for rest and sleep are met
– Medication is not administered to a child unless it is authorised

Step 4: Apply for a License

To become an approved childcare service you must contact your state or territory family day care service provider and apply for a service approval. This service will work with you to ensure you meet legislation requirements and National standards. To be considered for approval you must meet all the requirements and submit a form with appropriate documentation.

Whilst it differs all over Australia, you can expect to provide these required documents:

A background check: It is essential to obtain a criminal history check to be considered a suitable person for working with children. This requirement is to help ensure people working with children are suitable for the role, having regard to the security, health, safety and welfare of those children.

Medical check: This is to ensure you are physically fit to look after children. This clearance can easily be obtained from your local doctor or health care provider. This is to also make sure all your immunisations are up to date.

Updated CPR, First Aid and Asthma qualifications: This ensures you have all the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid to children or infants in your care. Ensure you have completed a specialised first aid unit designed for childcare workers and educators.

A blue card: Appropriate clearance for working with children

Insurance: Public liability insurance that is current and up to date. This is available from Family Day Care Australia

For example, your boss suddenly assigns you to go door-to-door in your neighbourhood area to handout brochures to potential customers. While sales and marketing isn’t your forte, don’t be afraid to try it out for it will surely give you a new valuable learning experience and skill. People who are not afraid to go out of their comfort zone are recognised as suitable candidates for the job.

Most employers will tell you many success stories about employees who are driven by their ambitions, who are hardworking, and have an optimistic outlook. They know that difficulties will always be part of their journey but despite that, they never give up and remain focused on their jobs. Never forget that persistence is key to personal development and success.

 

12. Creativity and Innovation

These two traits together go hand-in-hand to assist solve problems and make decisions that go beyond the norm. These traits also show that you are actively looking for ways to improve children’s development and learning while under your care. Employing different ways by which they can learn new things, discover their capabilities, and have fun while under your care promotes yourself as the suitable candidate for the job.
