Course Description

This qualification reflects the role of individuals working in kitchens who use a defined and limited range of food preparation and cookery skills to prepare food and menu items. They are involved in mainly routine and repetitive tasks and work under direct supervision. This qualification does not provide the skills required by commercial cooks, which are covered in SIT30816 Certificate III in Commercial Cookery.

Entry Requirements

Students are required to meet the following requirements below to enter into this course. Please note that specific eligibility requirements are required to be met for Queensland Government Funded Programs. Refer to the Fees and Funding section for more information on funding options.

To be eligible to participate, the requirements are that students:

  • Must be enrolled in a Queensland secondary school, years 10-12
  • Must be a resident in Queensland
  • Must provide a letter from an authorized officer of the school confirming the student’s identification
  • Must not have completed or currently enrolled in a Certificate I or II level qualification funded under VETiS,
    unless enrolment and/or completion fell prior to July 1, 2014, in which case entitlement still stands for VETiS funding.

As a condition of your enrolment, students will be required to complete a student training and employment survey within three months of finishing or discontinuing the training.

Students must be deemed competent in the pre-requisite unit(s) of a unit prior to the determination of competency in the unit in this qualification.

A Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment is conducted on all entrants prior to enrolment into the program to ensure that Queensford College can support each student throughout the program.

Students will need to ensure they are able to connect to the internet and have the capability to use our online learning system that meets the minimum technical requirements, which are:

  • Access to a laptop/computer is preferred
  • An operating system supporting the following browsers (current version and up to three most recent versions): Chrome, Firefox, Safari (excluding Safari on Windows), and Microsoft Edge
    • For Windows: Windows 10, 4 Gb RAM installed (minimum)
    • FOR MAC: Mac OS X 10.13 or above
  • Access to Word processing software, such as Microsoft Word
  • Reliable internet connection

Course Overview

This qualification to be suitable for high school students who have an interest and passion for the hospitality industry. Student will have a desire to learn through the practical hands on approach and prior experience through a part time job or similar which will be beneficial.

Nationally recognised

Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) focuses on delivering qualifications to provide students with the skills and knowledge required for specific industries. Students can undertake one funded VETiS course, as part of their school studies, delivered in a school by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or by enrolling in a course with an external RTO.

To achieve this qualification, 13 units must be successfully completed.

Training and assessment will be delivered in classroom sessions at the school or can be customised to suit student requirements. In addition, vocational placement of 12 service shifts is required to be completed.

*Pre-requisite requirements: SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety unit must be successfully completed prior to commencement of these units.

Students will be assessed through the following general methodsof assessment that may apply for each unit. Each of the selected
methods must be completed/deemed satisfactory, as each method is only a partial completion.

  • Written Assessment – a set of written tasks provided to the student required to be completed including, question and answer
  • Project/Report
  • Observation/Demonstration Report – students required to demonstrate tasks directly related to the training package requirements
  • Logbook.

The Certificate II in Kitchen Operations includes the requirement of a minimum of 12 complete service periods (shifts) of practical placement to be completed.

Participating in this course can: provide credit points towards the attainment of a Queensland Certificate of Education, and/or the attainment of a nationally recognised VET qualification and support young people’s transitions to employment, vocational and higher education pathways.

How to Apply

At Queensford College, we strive to make possible an easy, smooth, and efficient application process.

High school students are to check with their Career Advisor at school to see if they are eligible to participate then ask to register for the class.

VETiS program is designed on a flexible delivery model and completely customizable to support students to fit in with their school year schedule. Places are limited so early bookings are essential. To proceed, we require the following documents to be completed and returned back to us.

  • School Booking Form

    Completed by the School/VET Coordinator to secure a spot in the program.

  • Domestic Student Enrolment Form

    Domestic Enrolment Form to be completed and signed by the student and co-signed by their Parent/Guardian. As part of the enrolment, the student must provide their unique student identifier number (USI). If the student has not yet obtained a USI they can create a USI here.

  • Form of Identification

    A letter from an authorised officer of the school confirming the student’s

  • Student Information Confirmation

    As part of the Queensland Government Funding requirements, we require confirmation from the school for each student regarding their name, date of birth, year level, Australian residency status and Queensland residential address.
