Course Description

This training course covers the skills and knowledge required for an employee to carry out safe handling practices within the health care industry. Poor manual handling practice is one of the most common causes of injury in the health care industry, so it is important that all healthcare employees learn how to transfer people safely. 

 

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course students will be able to identity hazards and reduce manual handling injuries when lifting or moving those in community or residential environments.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements.

A Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment may be conducted on all entrants prior to enrolment into the program to ensure that Queensford College can support each student throughout the program.

Students will need to ensure they are able to connect to the internet and have the capability to use our online learning system that meets the minimum technical requirements, which are:

  • Access to a laptop/computer is preferred
  • An operating system supporting the following browsers (current version and up to three most recent versions): Chrome, Firefox, Safari (excluding Safari on Windows), and Microsoft Edge
    • For Windows: Windows 10, 4 Gb RAM installed (minimum)
    • FOR MAC: Mac OS X 10.13 or above
  • Access to Word processing software, such as Microsoft Word
  • Reliable internet connection

Course Overview

This qualification to be suitable for students who have interest in learning how to safely transfer people in the health care industry.

  • Identifying relevant standards and legislation related to managing manual handling tasks in the workplace
  • Identifying what manual handling is and its characteristics
  • Identify manual handling hazards
  • How to identify the safest method of movement to reduce the risk of injuries
  • Apply different lifting and transfer techniques to manage manual handling tasks
  • What happens when safe manual handling techniques are not applied

Class sizes are kept small (8-10) to ensure students have adequate working space and undivided attention from our industry qualified Trainers.

Assessment method Overview
Knowledge Quiz Questions e.g., true/false, multiple choice. Matching, drag and drop, ‘sequence of order’ list is required, or similar. These will be available in Moodle as a quiz.
Practical project/ observation These Assessment Tools require students to complete practical tasks and written work related to the practical.

Practical tasks vary and may require the Trainer/Assessor to complete an observation checklist observing skills of students, and/or students to complete templates and documents related to the practical tasks.

This tool may include but is not limited to the following:

·         short answer questions

·         roleplay involves student undertaking a role and addressing specific requirements – may include creating/updating documents to support the roleplay

·         presentation (where there are preparatory notes, slides, and the presentation itself)

·         completion of template to prepare specific documents and/or formal reports

·         lab activities including submitting evidence as a screenshot

·         case studies.

Physical Requirements: Participants must have the physical capacity to use appropriate equipment, posture and handling techniques to conduct a manual move and/or lift.

Course Cancellation and Refund Information

If you wish to cancel your enrolment, you must provide us with written notification to info@queensford.edu.au stating your full name, course details and reason for cancellation. Please note there will be NO REFUNDS granted before, on or after commencement date of a course. Students will be enrolled into the next class session if they have notified the college they cannot attend and wish to attend the next class
session.
